Reproductive Activity
The Pileated Woodpecker reaches the age of sexual maturity at 1. (2) The woodpeckers are monogamous, meaning they stay with the same mate throughout their entire lives. To mate, the male woodpeckers issue a high frequency call and this attracts female woodpeckers. When the female and the male are both in the same place, the male goes on top of the female and puts his cloaca on top of the female's cloaca. The male's sperm exits out of the male's cloaca and enter's the female's cloaca, where it eventually fertilizes the female's eggs. The sperm and eggs are sex cells known as gametes.

DEVELOPMENT
The female woodpecker will lay up to 4 eggs per brood, which happens yearly. It takes around 2 weeks before the eggs begin to hatch. The eggs are kept safe in nests burrowed into holes created by their parents in dead trees. The females sit upon the eggs during the day and the males take their place at night. Although they are strong enough to fly a month after hatching, they wait an additional month before they leave the nest, receiving food from both parents all the while (3). As stated before, the woodpecker reaches sexual maturity at 1 and can live an average of nine years.
